So, you have everything installed, and now it's time to try it out.
Find the start icon in the start menu, under "(All) Programs" -> "Heimskringla" -> "Polyglot Radio Jock", may vary depending on your Windows version and language version. Click it.
If everything is alright, you should after a few seconds see the splash screen.
A few more seconds later, the program's main window should open.
Also make sure that 4 Winamp icons open in the toolbar, just beside the little clock, normally in the lower right corner on your screen.
If something doesn't seem alright so far, go back and check that you have all the extras installed.
If you're quick enough, you will see a number in the upper right corner of the program's main window counting down to zero. Don't worry, that's no problem, we will explain that later.
Before proceding, let me mention that you can change the whole language interface of the program. At this moment, you can change between English (the default startup), Spanish and Swedish. If you like to change, find the menu, hit Show, then Language and then your preferred language. In this manual I will use the English names, so if you are in doubt you can quickly change between your language and English just to make sure you are about to choose the right option. Language changes are immediate (with some exceptions for child windows).
Now, you must load some songs into the playlist for the whole thing to work. In the menu, click File and then Manage Entries... (or use the keyboard shortcut: Shift+Ins). A new window opens, called Choose File(s).
Top left, Select Drive and Folder: In the top combobox (dropdown list), select which hard drive (or partition, or removable media, or network drive) you want to look through.
Browse to a folder, or just select the whole drive. To the right, select which file types that you want to look for. .mp3 is already chosen, and other filetypes supported by Winamp are also supported here. The All and None buttons below work as expected...
Bottom left, there are two buttons, Path and File. If you hit Path, the program will search through the selected folder and all its subfolders for the filetypes that you have specified, and present matching files in the list box to the right. The files will be sorted alphabetically according to their full path names.
If instead of hitting the Path button, you hit the File button, the same thing will happen, except the matching files will be sorted according to their file names, and the path to their container folder will be presented after the file name.
After finding some files that you want to have included in your playlist, select said files by clicking on them. You can click on one, or sweep over several with the primary (left, normally) mouse button held down, or click one at a time while holding down the Control button or Shift button. You can also hit the All button below to select all.
After selecting some files, hit the Add button. The files will be added to your playlist. Search for more files if you want to. When finished for now, hit the Close button. (There are more options in this window. We'll cover them later.)
Back in the Main window, you will notice that the list box on the left, the Main List, has filled up with several songs. They are listed alphabetically by artist name and indicated like so: Artist - Title. Example: The Beatles - Love Me Do. If you click on a song in the Main List you will see that some information about the song appears in the right pane, the Song Info List, such as Artist, Song, Duration, etc.
Well, hopefully, anyway. The program takes its information (except for duration) from, in priority order, ID3v2 tags, ID3v1 tags or, lastly, the file name. It's good practice to set your ID3 tags correctly before loading them into the playlist. This program won't let you edit the tags on the files themselves. (Use another application for that, such as www.mp3tag.de/en or one of several others available.) You may, however, manually edit the information in the Polyglot lists for each song. More on that later.
For now, just hit the Change to Auto button, and see how the files start moving around in the windows, and listen to the songs mixing and blending beautifully into each other.
Before we continue, you'll want to know how to stop the music. That's easy, just hit the button top right marked Change to Manual, and you're now in Manual mode, as stated in the text box next to the button.
Now you have access to several buttons that was greyed out in the Auto mode. If you don't touch anything, the song will go to an end, and nothing will come after. However, if you want to stop the song before its end, you can either hit Cut, which will end the song abruptly, or you can hit Stop and Fade, which will fade out the song.
The Cue button works this way: Select one or more songs in the Main List, and hit the Cue button, they will appear in the Cue List. To remove songs from the Cue List, select one or more songs in the Cue List, and hit the Clear button.
To play a song, select one and only one song in the Cue List, and hit the Play button. You can also hit the button marked Play... (three dots following) to open the Choose One File To Play window. More on that later.
Finally, in this chapter, exit the Polyglot Radio Jock by going to the menu, hit File and then Exit.
